What is a cultured pearl?
The phrase "cultured pearl" or "freshwater pearl", refers to pearls that are grown inside a living shelled mollusk on a pearl farm,
which has row upon row of pearls.
The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, however, many other shapes of pearl including baroque pearls occur.
The pearls of old, as found in Royal crowns & jewellery, are usually very rare pearls that have occured naturally deep in the ocean.
These pearls are extremely expensive, however, cultured pearls are real pearls that have occured naturally but have been farmed &
range from the in-expensive to the very expensive.
For more information on pearl history have a look at our Pearl history guide.
Are your pearls real pearls?
Yes they are! They are real cultured pearls which are just as real as pearls found deep in the ocean. They should not be confused
with the fancy sounding word: faux. Faux pearls are not real pearls at all and the french name hides the fact that they are fake.
This word can also be translated into meaning, "made to look like" or "artificial" & is pronounced as "Fo" not "Fox".
Do cultured pearls require any special care?
Yes, they do. In fact pearls are classed as Gemstones and are the only natural organic Gemstone available, in the world, as such
they are precious items of jewellery.
For more information on pearl care have a look at our Pearl care guide.
How much is the post & packing?
Typically, one item such as a pearl necklace would cost around £5
