Pearl care
Pearls are some of the worlds finest jewels and are classed as Gemstones. However, they are more
delicate than other gemstones and require special care. Pearls are the worlds only organic gemstone and
the surface (nacre), which is composed of calcium carbonate, can wear with time.
Because the surface is softer than other gemstones special care must be taken when storing and cleaning
your pearls as they can be easily scratched or damaged.
Pears with thicker nacre are more durable and expensive than other pearls but even so they still need that
little bit of extra care.
Substances such as hair spray/laquer, perfume or body oils can still affect the shine and durabilty of a pearl.
Due to the way some pearls are worn, for example a necklace, you may find that the pearls at the neck will
wear after a long time. Also the acid in a womans skin (which varies) can cause the pearl to lose its shine and
gradually wear. This can be counteracted by wiping the pearls with a dry cloth after wearing them.
Besides being soft, pearls are easily damaged by liquids like perfume, vinegar or lemon juice.
Excessive heat can turn pearls brown or dry them out and make them crack.
Even very dry air, as found in safety deposit vaults, can damage pearls.
